Amazon Faces New Lawsuit For Allowing Access To Virtual Casino Apps

A lawsuit has been brought against Amazon by a Nevada man who said he was addicted to illegal online slot games accessible through the retail juggernaut.

The plaintiff is represented by Todd Logan of the Edelson Law Firm, which focuses on so-called “social casinos.” Since 2020, Todd has recovered more than $1 billion in settlements for Edelson clients. Todd said this was the law firm’s eighth lawsuit over social casino apps.

The lawsuit references a 2018 U.S. appeals court ruling that found “social casino” apps illegal under Washington state law. Claims indicate that Amazon knows social casinos are illegal but maintains a 30% financial interest by brokering slot games.

What Are Social Casino Apps?

Social casino apps differ from traditional 18+ online casinos because they do not pay out real money. Instead, players can win virtual tokens for more plays on social casino apps. The most popular social casino games are slots and poker.

Social casinos mimic the games you find at trusted online casinos and typically offer bonus rewards to start playing; however, once you run out of bonus funds, you must pay to play.

Are 18+ Online Casinos Legal In The United States?

Yes, online casinos are legal in the United States for players over 18 if there are no state laws forbidding their use. Washington is the only state that has passed laws against the use of online casinos; however, no one has been prosecuted for gambling online.

U.S. gambling laws do not outlaw online gambling activities. Instead, they let the states decide what can and cannot be accessed.
