The Treasure State’s gambling history begins like many other Western States, first early settlers brought card games and gambling games along with them, which sparked a thriving lottery market in the 1800s.
In 1889, The new constitution of Montana bans all types of gambling.
After the great depression, Montana repealed its prohibition in 1933 and pull tabs became popularized.
In 1937, the Montana legislature passed The Hickey Act, this legalized a variety of table games only if they were licensed by the county.
By 1945, slot machines were popping up everywhere and the state of Montana was on the losing end of the battle, thus they decided to legalize them for nonprofit organization purposes and collect taxes from them.
In 1949, the state of Montana allocated $40,000.00 to begin enforcing gambling laws within their state.
By 1950, Montana’s Supreme Court made slots & punch boards illegal.
In 1973, legislatures pass the Card Game, Bingo, Raffles, and Sports Pool Act.
In 1976, to take the place of live bingo, the Supreme Court in Montana legalized video keno.
